Ms. Gordon has extensive experience in bereavement counseling and decided that teens would benefit from a retreat specifically geared towards their interests and needs. Time for Teens will be an experience that each individual will benefit from following the loss of a loved one.
The four day bereavement retreat is held annually in August from 9a.m.-4p.m., lunch is provided. There are designated meeting times and places which will be identified two weeks prior to retreat to those who are attending each year. Families need to bring their children to the designated meeting area where Time For Teens will then provide transportation over to Shelter Island.
What to expect during retreat week:
Group Therapy will be held daily with professional licensed therapists, teens will be encouraged to talk about the person who has died and learn tools for coping with grief.
Psychodrama, a creative technique, will also be offered to teens during retreat week. Historically, psychodrama traces to the principle of play, acting out experiences through dramatic methods.
There will be activities daily including but not exclusive to: kayaking, a golf clinic, yoga, swimming and basketball. Teens will have a choice during certain times as to which activity they would enjoy the most.
Lunch will be provided each day, served at 12:30p.m.
The cost of the program is $25 per family to help cover expenses along with donations made from local community members and businesses on the east end.
